Beach Music has been a well established part of the Beaches community since 1984. The warm and friendly atmosphere has proven to be an integral part of the studio's success. The teachers at the studio are all well educated, talented performers and composers. Lessons are tailor made to suit the wants and needs of the students, whether it's preparing for Royal Conservatory or university entrance exams or just learning the basics to have fun.

The studio is managed and co-owned by April Cameron. Along with her brother and business partner, Scott Cameron, she has built Beach Music into a thriving centre of musical activity in the Beaches.

A Message from Beach Music

I have had the good fortune to be part of the Beaches community through Beach Music Arts since 1987. One of the things I have truly enjoyed seeing is the progress of young children who begin lessons full of doubt, trepidation and zero motivation and end up falling in love with what they are learning. These youngsters will surprise even themselves as they exceed at their instrument beyond everyone's expectations. There have been many success stories to counter the not-so- successful times when a youngster gave up too soon.

I have heard many adults complain that their parents let them quit music lessons as a child because, back then, the motivation just wasn't there. Yet these same adults will amaze me by starting all over again from scratch, making time from their busy lives to attend lessons, week after week, year after year, until they know as much - and play as well - as they set out to. For anyone just starting out I would recommend one thing: be very patient with yourself (or your child). Learning music is like learning a whole new language. The rewards are huge, but it takes time to digest musical concepts and to train your fingers, voice or your musical ear to do what you want.

Music can touch something very deep within us, as we are vulnerable in expressing whatever is unique about ourselves, and are often stirred up emotionally in a way that we weren't expecting. A youngster may suddenly burst out crying from a tough day at school the minute he or she puts their hands on the piano and starts to play. A student may be too self-critical about how they sound and hold back a huge part of them self in every lesson. Conversely, there may be peals of laughter coming from the vocal studio because a teacher and student are having so much fun singing harmony. We bring all of who we are and all of what we feel to the music that we make. Understanding that vulnerability is an important part of the process of letting ourselves be totally free in our own self-expression.

Whether seeing a child's excitement at playing a piece with two hands for the first time, hearing a vocal student finally nail that high note, or watching a recital student frantically run through their piece five or six times until they make it through the stuck part, I have felt privileged - and at times deeply moved - to be in a position to observe the unfolding of music in everyone.
